On 30 August 2026, the School of Law, Walailak University, conducted an academic outreach initiative aimed at advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on strengthening legal knowledge, promoting human rights awareness, and fostering appreciation of the arts among local communities and young people.

The School of Law, Walailak University, continues to advance its commitment to sustainable community engagement through academic outreach. A team of faculty members, including Lecturer Sawettachat Jubsilp, Head of the project “Upskills-Reskills Human Rights Law for People x Saturday School”; Lecturer Natthjira Kraitong, “Enhancing Awareness of Legal Rights and Duties in the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Process”; Lecturer Kwanmanee Maneechote, “Youth Awareness: Understanding the Law and Staying Safe from Drugs”; and Lecturer Nittaya Limruangkul, “Essential Legal English Vocabulary for Students,” led law students in conducting academic outreach activities in Thung Lat Community, Mueang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Ban Song Phraek School, Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The initiative aimed to bring legal and academic knowledge into practical use for the benefit of local communities while addressing and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) identified in the project.

The outreach activities were divided into two main components according to the contexts and target groups of each area.

Community Outreach at Thung Lat Community

At Thung Lat Community, faculty members and law students jointly conducted training sessions for older persons and members of the general public on law for older persons, environmental law, and English for legal and everyday use.

The activities focused on providing participants with legal knowledge and English vocabulary relevant to their daily lives, enabling older persons and community members to better understand and exercise their fundamental rights. Such knowledge is an important aspect of human rights that older persons should be able to understand and access equally. The activities also sought to enhance awareness of environmental law and encourage community participation in protecting and conserving local natural resources.

Human Rights and Art Activities at Ban Song Phraek School

At Ban Song Phraek School, academic outreach activities were organized for upper-primary school students. The activities integrated art and human rights education, incorporating concepts of rights, equality, and respect for human dignity into art-based learning.

Through creative, hands-on activities, students were able to understand human rights as a subject closely connected to their everyday lives in an accessible and engaging way.

The activities were conducted in collaboration with the Saturday School Foundation, a non-profit organization that creates opportunities for learning beyond the classroom by engaging volunteers from diverse professional backgrounds in contributing to the development of education in Thailand.

Impact of the Project

The success of the initiative extended beyond achieving the project’s planned SDG objectives. It also contributed to the development of all groups involved in the project.

The beneficiaries—including older persons, community members, and students—gained knowledge of law, human rights, and English language skills that can be applied in their daily lives and used to better understand and protect their rights.

At the same time, Walailak University law students, as providers of academic knowledge, developed their skills in communicating and transferring knowledge, gained practical experience through engagement with local communities, and strengthened their sense of public responsibility as future legal professionals committed to serving society.

Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The academic outreach initiative addressed the project’s planned SDG targets as follows:

• SDG 4: Quality Education – Promoting inclusive and lifelong learning opportunities for older persons, community members, and young people through the provision of legal knowledge, English language skills, and art-based learning. The project also provided law students with opportunities for active learning through practical engagement.
• SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities – Expanding opportunities for local older persons and young people to access legal knowledge, human rights education, and English language skills, thereby helping to reduce gaps in access to rights and legal protection.
• SDG 13: Climate Action and SDG 15: Life on Land – Raising awareness of environmental conservation through education on environmental law and encouraging community participation in the sustainable protection and preservation of local natural resources and ecosystems.
• SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions – Promoting knowledge of human rights, laws concerning older persons, and social justice in order to contribute to stronger communities where individuals understand and respect one another’s rights.
• SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – Strengthening collaboration among Walailak University’s School of Law, Thung Lat Community, Ban Song Phraek School, and the Saturday School Foundation to promote sustainable social development through education and community engagement.
